The Maha-ri Tombs in Hwaseong are one of the main ancient tombs in the Hanseong period region, consisting of numerous transfusion-type stone coffin tombs and transverse stone chamber tombs. Within the Maha-ri tomb group, various tomb types are mixed together, and a transition in burial practices can be observed. It starts with earthen tombs using wooden coffins and wooden crowns as the main burial components, and then transitions to transfusion-type stone coffin tombs and transverse stone chamber tombs. The existence of transverse stone chamber tombs during the Hanseong period, as observed in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Bhuncheong-do, is recognized as significant. It indicates that the Baekje forces during the Hanseong period accepted and expanded the use of transverse stone chamber tombs. Through a comparison with major tomb groups in the Hanseong period region, the structural characteristics of the tombs identified in the Maha-ri Tomb Group indicate that the stone coffin tombs and transverse stone chamber tombs were mainly constructed around the 4th century. We can observe the appearance of stone coffin tombs and transverse stone chamber tombs before their spread to other regions. Furthermore, when examining the surrounding archaeological sites in the Balancheon Stream basin where the Maha-ri Tomb group is located, it is evident that there are diverse cultural aspects that differ from the Jinwi Stream and Osan stream basins. This suggests that the area has a weaker intellectual character. Consequently, it is inferred that the Balan-ri village ruins located downstream of Balan-ri, through its reorganization after the 4th century, served as a base village for Baekje and is closely related to the construction group of the Maha-ri Tombs. Therefore, the construction group of the Maha-ri tombs is considered to be the tombs of the ruling forces that were formed as Baekje expanded into the provinces. Through the Maha-ri tombs, we can observe Baekje's advancement into the Hwaseong area and its domination of the local regions, particularly in the Balan Stream basin, which has been the stronghold of Baekje's control forces since the 4th century.
