After the founding of the People's Republic of China, China stepped into a new period of transition to socialism. The new regime urgently needed to transform the people's original mentality in the shortest possible time, and propagated the new ruling philosophy. Therefore, in 1949, the Communist Party of China launched the first decreed art movement in the history of new Chinese art, the Novo New Year Painting Movement. As a communication medium bridging the ruling philosophy and the practice of ideology transformation of the public, novo New Year paintings have played an important role in the propaganda of the new government. This study examines how the Chinese Communist Party used the novo New Year paintings to establish the mainstream socialist ideology and to shape the people's national identity with the new regime by analyzing the transformation of this kind of painting against the social and cultural background of the time. The article first clarifies the emergence and development of the Movement, and then summarizes the evolution of the images of the novo New Year paintings under the influence of politics in three aspects: new symbols, new stories, and new forms. Based on this, the author further analyzes the four dimension of constructing the mainstream ideology in the early period of the founding of the country, including the weakening of divinity, the stimulation of class consciousness, the identification with socialist legitimacy, and the shaping of the Marxist view of labor. This study argues that the Novo New Year Painting Movement conveys national policies and political concepts through art works, and plays a vital role in terms of the new Chinese regime consolidation, the Communist Party of China's control over the national ideological discourse, and the people’s identification with the nation. The Movement is not only where Chinese politics comes across culture with historical significance, but also a typical case of the combining of Chinese folk art and official ideology, which is important for understanding the evolution of Chinese political culture and the transformation of social history.
