This paper explores the idea of American Exceptionalism presented in Colson Whitehead’s zombie novel, Zone One. Many critics have argued that 9/11 functioned as a nodal point in perceiving the de-territorial state of global space, which was further articulated by the fluid mobility of terrorists. Reflecting the anxiety over the decentering reality, the post-9/11 American society has witnessed a strong impulse of reasserting a series of exceptionalist projects, from defining the national soil as a chosen place designated for conveying liberal democracy to categorizing citizens into national agencies. Zone One casts a critical eye on this politico-ideological movement. The novel presents various attempts by American Phoenix to reclaim Americanness both physically and symbolically, such as keeping the pure state of national boundary, projecting national myths into the future, and interpellating survivors into Phoenix Americans. All of these exceptionalist attempts, however, turn out to be futile, not because of exterritorial threats by zombies but because of the ideological flaws inherent in them. Given that, this paper aims to reevaluate Zone One within the post-9/11 milieu by showing that its zombie-ridden apocalypse actually reflects the American exceptionalist desire in our time.
