By looking at Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club (1989), this thesis analyzes the metaphorizations of the body, affects, and embodied experiences of the female diasporic subject as the author portrays them. This thesis will thus use the facets of diaspora and the affects of the body in order to analyze the ways in which Tan uses diasporic bodies within the plot as conduits and tools for introspection. As will be shown in the following sections, a definition of diaspora in relation to gender is relevant to understanding the works of Asian American literature. In order to claim a diasporic female subjectivity in the novel, there’s a need to separate criticism against Amy Tan to encapsulate the analysis of a ‘truthful’ narrative in The Joy Luck Club. By using affect theory, trauma theory and bodily theory, this thesis analyzes the treatment of the Asian American diasporic female subject.
