The Roaring Girl has gained a renewed critical interest with the help of feminist studies and the re-evaluation of women’s place in early modern England, but this essay raises serious questions concerning the feminist account of Moll’s cross-dressing and attempts to place her provocative transvestism in the context of low-lives’ survival history. In the early modern period, the explosive growth of London was accompanied with a swelling population of vagrants, inspiring writers of the period to respond in contradictory fashions. Pro-City writers glamorized London by associating it with Jerusalem or Troy whilst anti-City polemists condemned its sprawling expansion by equating it with Babylon or Sodom. Particularly, The Roaring Girl draws upon London’s underworld which served as a living space for the sub-social group such as rogues, tricksters and cutpurses. With its featured characterization of a living woman of contemporary notoriety, the play offers an important insight into those murky figures of the underworld, providing vivid images of the low-lives which have been largely ignored in early modern literary studies. This essay uses Moll’s controversial appearance on the stage as a subtext for a multifaceted interaction with her dramatic representation in the play. It projects her contradictory images into multi-facades of early modern London which comprised the antithetical images of Sodom-on-Thames and Nova Troia. Borrowing a theoretical model regarding rhizomes from Deleuze and Guattari, it tries to overcome fragmentary pictures of petty criminals by deducing a cultural inference in general from intractable images of Moll and London.
