Objective: The present study was to review recent advances and their limitations in digital human modeling and simulation (DHMS) with the integration of the fourth industrial technologies.

Background: Many studies have been reported for the effective utilization of DHMS technology in ergonomic product design and evaluation by incorporating VR/AR/MR/ER, Digital Twin, and ML/AI technologies.

Method: An in-depth review was conducted on 30 papers published within the last ten years that applied VR/AR/MR/ER, Digital Twin, and ML/AI technologies to the DHMS technology.

Results: The integration of the fourth industrial technologies into DHMS has facilitated the visualization of product and workstation designs in virtual environments and/or real-world scenarios.

Conclusion: This integration of the fourth industrial technologies into DHMS has enhanced user experiences, optimized interactions between humans, products, manufacturing systems, and/or robots, leading to improved productivity, comfort, and safety and health of workers.

Application: Future research efforts need to be focused on improving the performance of hardware and software components to effectively handle complex modeling tasks and simulations, enhancing the quality of user experiences to create intuitive and immersive interfaces, establishing legal and ethical guidelines to safeguard user privacies, and enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the advanced DHMS technology incorporating the fourth industrial technologies.
