This article explores some of the theories regarding aesthetic reflections inscribed in the relationship between the self and the world. In particular, this article focuses on the phenomenological involvement of a subject in the process of aesthetic judgment theorized by Paul Ricoeur, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jean Baudrillard, and Slavoj Zizek. Challenging the ideational tradition of Hegel from different perspectives, these philosophers interrogate the question of judgment arising from the self, the world, and their relationship. Ricoeur and Gadamer’s hermeneutical approach, Baudrillard’s concept of simulacre, and Zizek’s materialistic psychoanalysis will be discussed. This article draws attention to the phenomenological strands that invite us to reflect on the experience of works of art in light of their dialectical relationships and attempts to answer some of the substantial questions of literary and cultural studies in the twentieth century: dialectical experience, aesthetic judgment, and phenomenological interpretation.
