Korean society is already a demographically multiracial and multicultural society. Although there is discrimination, prejudice, and hatred against foreigners residing in Korea, they are already accepted as members of Korean society in many parts of society.
However, refugees are still considered strangers in Korean society. Many Koreans perceive refugees as "uninvited guests" who have taken advantage of Korean society.
This article was written out of curiosity about why Koreans are so particular about refugees. I believe that the Korean society"s perception of refugees is based on the discourse on refugees that has been created by Korean society, especially the image of refugees created by the representation system. The distorted image of a refugee or refugee applicant created by the representation system holds a stronger influence over the Korean perception system than the actual existence of a refugee.
In this thesis, “Spain Refugee Camp” by Choi In-seok (2008) and “Refugee One Day” by Pyo Myung-hee (2018) were examined to explore how refugees are represented in these works. The two works exhibit differences in their representation of refugees, reflecting the 10-year time difference. Choi In-seok portrays refugees as abstract beings that exist only as rumors. Pyo Myung-hee depicts them as unique characters with stories of persecution. However, despite this difference, both works share a common problem in representing refugees solely based on the image of refugees created by the refugee discourse system in Korean society. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to listen to their unfamiliar stories rather than becoming accustomed to the refugees created by the representation system. Through this process, we may find a clue to the problem of refugees, who are inherently complex individuals.
