In the 14th century, a monk from India, Zhikong, traveled across the vast territory of the Yuan Empire and Goryeo, spreading Buddhist precepts. Several studies have shown that Zhikong’s precepts occupy an important place in the history of Buddhism in East Asia(especially in late Goryeo and early Joseon). The fact that Buddhism was still alive in India at the time of the spread of Islam, and that it was transmitted to Goryeo through Zhikong and his disciples, has been confirmed as an important topic in the study of Korean Buddhist history. To add to this, the fact that the so-called ‘Pax Mongolica’ of the 14th century made it possible for Zhikong to travel long distances, and the close connection between the Mongol-Yuan Empire and Goryeo Dynasty, made it possible for Zhikong to come to Goryeo and spread his precepts.
Zhikong’s travels and teachings have been recorded in both Korean and Chinese sources. Based on these records, previous studies have identified many points related to Zhikong, and research is still being actively conducted. Although sufficient research is being conducted through the materials related to Zhikong that have been known, two documents related to Zhikong have not received much attention, and I felt the need to introduce them to the Korean academic community as soon as possible. Therefore, this article analyzes the appearance of Zhikong in 元故太中大夫佛海普印廣慈圓悟大禪師大龍翔集慶寺長老忠公塔銘, written by Ouyangxuan(歐陽玄), a literary figure at the end of the Yuan Empire, and 游新庵記, written by Hongwu Emperor, the founder of the Ming Empire. And this article try to explain the context in which Zhikong is mentioned by analyzing the situation at the end of the Yuan Empire.
Focusing on the interpretation of two newly introduced Chinese sources, this paper explores another aspect of Zhikong’s behavior and thought. It is intended as a reference for future research on Zhikong from a different perspective. Therefore, I hope that this paper can make a small contribution to research that can derive new perspectives through a comprehensive analysis of existing sources on Zhikong.

14세기에 인도 출신의 승려 指空이 원 제국의 넓은 영토를 거쳐 고려까지 와서 불교의 계율을 전파했고, 그 계율이 동아시아(특히 고려 말기, 조선 초기)의 불교 역사에서 중요한 위상을 차지하고 있다는 점은 여러 연구들을 통해 밝혀졌다. 지공과 관련된 다양한 관점의 선행 연구들을 통해 이슬람교가 전파되고 있었던 당시 인도에서 불교가 여전히 살아남아 있었고, 그것이 지공을 매개로 고려까지 전달되었으며 지공의 제자인 나옹, 자초 등을 거치면서 자리를 잡게 되었던 점은 특히 불교사 연구에서 중요한 주제로 확정되었다. 그리고 한 가지를 더 추가하자면, 14세기의 이른바 ‘팍스 몽골리카’가 지공의 장거리 여행을 가능하게 만들었고 몽골(원)제국과 고려가 긴밀하게 연결되어 있었던 점도 지공이 고려까지 와서 자신의 계율을 전파할 수 있게 만든 시대적 환경이었다.
이렇게 중요한 인물인 지공의 행적, 계율 등을 기록한 사료는 한국, 중국측에 남아 있다. 이러한 기록을 토대로 선행 연구들이 지공과 관련된 많은 점을 파악했고, 여전히 활발한 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 지금까지 파악된 지공관련 자료를 통해서도 충분한 연구가 진행되고 있지만, 최근에 중국학계에서 지공과 관련되어 주목을 받지 못했던 사료 2건이 소개되어 이를 한국의 학계에 최대한 빨리 소개하고 알려야 할 필요성을 느꼈다. 그래서 본고에서는 원제국 말기의 문인인 구양현이 쓴 「元故太中大夫佛海普印廣慈圓悟大禪師大龍翔集慶寺長老忠公塔銘」과 명을 건국한 홍무제 주원장이 남긴 「游新庵記」라는 문장에서 지공이 등장하고 있고, 원 제국 말기 상황을 함께 설명하여 어떠한 맥락에서 지공이 언급되고 있는가를 분석하였다. 이 검토를 통해 기존의 설명과는 방향이 다른 부분도 확인할 수 있었다.
본 논문은 새로 소개된 중국 측의 자료 2건의 해석을 중심으로 지공의 또 다른 행적과 그의 생각을 살펴보았다. 이는 차후 이루어질 지공에 관한 또 다른 관점의 연구를 위한 참고자료로서의 성격을 가지고 있다. 그래서 기존에 이미 알려진 지공 관련 사료와의 종합적 분석을 통해 새로운 시각을 도출할 수 있는 연구에 본 논문이 작은 기여라도 할 수 있다면 다행이겠다.
