Energy is an essential resource for the economy, security, and people"s lives and is directly related to the survival of the nation. The United States, focusing on this, established the petrodollar recycling system to maintain its status as a key currency country without falling into the trap of reliability and liquidity. Focusing on this point, this study analyzes the US monetary hegemony with variables of the US shale revolution and the war in Ukraine, which have a great influence on the energy political economy.
The shale revolution allowed the US to build its own petrodollar recycling system that the US could directly manage, and the war in Ukraine helped the US expand its share of the European energy market. In addition, as the yuan and euro show limitations in fulfilling their role as key currencies, as they did during the 2008 global financial crisis, the dollar emerges as a safe-haven asset. However, a follow-up study on currency hegemony is needed in that the war in Ukraine, which may affect the dollar hegemony of the United States, is not over, and the negotiations of the petro-yuan between Saudi Arabia and China is under discussion.
