Lao She's novel Divorce deals with real social problems at the time of its creation. As the newly enacted marriage law was promulgated and implemented at that time, it had an impact on divorce between husband and wife in many families. However, divorce was not easy in practice at that time. Lao She created this novel based on these social issues and practical contradictions at that time. The novel Divorce is a milestone, in his 30s, turning into a writer with realism tendency. In addition, the literary and artistic values of Divorce are worthy of reevaluating from today's perspective. In particular, it needs to be reanalyzed and reevaluated to have better assessment than the existing one in that it successfully embodied the creation and description of unique character types and humor which are his specialty. In this paper, we examine the character images of Zhang Dage and Laoli, the main characters in Divorce, with a focus on the homo duplex characteristics. In addition, we pay attention to Mrs. Li's active image and subjectivity, which have been recognized as a flat and passive character, and we highlight the solidarity relationship between women. Thus, from the successful construction of the unique and round character images in Divorce, we can guess the reason why he cherished it more than Luotuoxiangzi, which is well known to the public as his representative work.
