This study aims to examine the meaning of edification to implement a moral human society by accepting Neo-Confucianism.
In the late Goryeo, Confucian scholars pursued reform policies based on Neo-Confucianism and tried to realize the ideals of the three generations of Ha, Eun, and Zhou. They viewed politics as a process of establishing ethics and morals in pursuit of the rule of ritual, and punishment was used as a tool to support this vision. This can be called Virtue Precedes Penalty.
Confucian scholars strived to be men of virtue in the quest for the ideals of “Xiujizhiren” Confucianism. Officials, who were referred to as a “superior person”, appeared as a subject of edification. Just as the superior person is the wind and the petty person is the grass, a superior’s exemplary behavior influences juniors to lead the people. Edification is realized by the leadership of those who show the way first, regarded as the “superior person”. At that time, “gwangam (seeing and feeling, 觀感)” referred to doing good deeds after being touched and impressed. Edification by perception and emotion referred to the act of emulating, since juniors would be deeply impressed after seeing how their superiors, including a great leader or a superior person, would act.
The Joseon Dynasty needed to mobilize the people, for example to build castles or reservoirs to defend against foreign enemies. The off-farming season was used to mobilize the people while seeking the public"s understanding. If the leadership rules the people by doing its duty, the people will not complain no matter how hard they work, and if they obey with their heart, they will forget the hard work and even risk death.
In the late Goryeo period and early Joseon Dynasty, humanities-based governance was pursued to create a social system that allowed people to obey with their hearts and to forget their hard work as a result of appealing to human morals.
