Taira, Kaori(2015), “A Study of the Contrast Between ‘-lyeko hata’ and ‘-yooto suru’,” Language & Information Society 26. This study classifies and investigates the characteristics of Korean ‘-lyeko hata’ with an animate or inanimate subject. Based on the results, we examine the similarities and differences between ‘-lyeko hata’ and Japanese ‘-yooto suru’. ‘-lyeko’ and ‘-yoo’ are similar in expressing the speaker’s intention in the case of an animate subject. The findings of this pilot study regarding the difference between the two forms are as follows: First, ‘-lyeko’ indicates the intention of a speaker as decided before the utterance scene. On the other hand, ‘-yoo’ indicates the intention of a speaker as decided at the utterance scene. Second, ‘-lyeko’ is not used as a soliloquy while ‘-yoo’ is. Third, when we ask the intention of the listener, we can use ‘-lyeko’ but not ‘-yoo’. When ‘-lyeko hata’ and ‘-yooto suru’ co-occur with an inanimate subject, ‘-yooto suru’ cannot express a “state change” or “physiological phenomenon.” In this case, we use ‘-(si)sooda’, which is used to express a guess.
