This paper aims to examine what kind of relationship there is between [X-hata] and [X+ul+hata], and whether these two words can be analyzed internally or not. From the perspective of the prototype theory, the internal structure of typical words can never be separated by other linguistic units. However, arguing that lexical integrity is a necessary property of words is too strong. Certainly in Korean, several phenomena can be observed that suggest the internal structure of words is analyzable. Accordingly, parts of words that can be analyzed as independent words should be treated as peripheral words. If we take this perspective, we can analyze [X+ul+hata] as being the result of separating the interior of [X-hata] and qualifies as a peripheral word. Further, if we limit the scope of the lexical island constraint to a typical word, we can insist that the separable verbs of the form [X+(ul)+(hata)] do not violate the lexical island constraint.
