Report Errors
Dokdo education has been emphasized in Japan since Dokdo Day was established in 2005. Accordingly, Dokdo education in Social Studies of Korea public education has been also emphasized. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to investigate the origins of Dokdo education in both modern Korea and Japan public education and to identify the features of Dokdo education. In result, Dokdo in Korea public geographic textbooks and atlas is presented as part of Korea. On the other hand, Ulleungdo and Dokdo in some Japan geographic textbooks are described as part of Joseon. Moreover, Ulleungdo and Dokdo in many atlas are colored differently from Japanese territories while ones in only a few atlas are belonging to Japan. Although the confusion lasted between the 1870s to the 1880s, it is dominant to present that Ulleungdo and Dokdo are not part of Japan in these textbooks from the late 1880s to before the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. This is the Japanese government's political stance as reflected in geographic textbooks and atlas.
