This study examined the phonological characteristics of the dialects used in Changnyeong in Gyeongsangnam-do and Cheongdo in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which belong to the southeastern regional group of dialects. Considering the phonological system of the two regional dialects, 19 consonants are used in Changnyeong depending on whether ‘ㅅ’ and ‘ㅆ’ are distinguished and 18, in Cheongdo. For the vowel system, ‘ㅔ’ and ‘ㅐ’ are pronounced as the neutralized /E/ in Changnyeong and /?/, in Cheongdo, depending on whether ‘ㅔ’ and ‘ㅐ’ are distinguished. The following are the results of the phonological study of the two regional dialects; First, the ‘initial glottalization’ of ‘ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ’ was realized at a high rate whereas the realization rate of ‘ㅈ’ in Changnyeong dialect and ‘ㅅ’ in Cheongdo dialect was low. Second, for ‘vowel harmony,’ the transition, ‘-아X>-어X,’ showed variance depending on the nature of stem vowel and opening or closure of the stem syllable. Changnyeong dialect has maintained the vowel harmony that has continued from middle Korean as it is. In Cheongdo dialect, however, the change progressed more quickly with the closed syllables than open syllables in ‘ㅏ’ stems. ‘ㅂ’ irregular stem was combined with ‘-어X’ and ‘ㅅ’ and ‘ㅎ’ irregular stem, ‘-아X.’ Third, for ‘complete progressive assimilation,’ ‘u-complete progressive assimilation’ was actively in progress in Changnyeong dialect and ‘i-complete progressive assimilation,’ in Cheongdo dialect. For ‘o-complete progressive assimilation,’ ‘와X’ forms were realized in both dialects.
