The purpose of this study was to examine physical activity and sleep patterns (total sleep time, sleep-onset time, and wake time) of children and adolescents with developmental disabilities using wearable devices in order to provide scientific data to literature. A total of 31 participants with developmental disabilities were included for data analysis and they wore the wearable devices for seven days. Participants’ general characteristics were confirmed through a questionnaire. Physical activity and sleep patterns (sleep time, sleep time, and wake time) were measured using the wearable device Miband4. This wearable device was worn on the wrist and can count the number of steps, heart rate, and sleep time. Results showed that there were significant differences in sleep-onset time and wake time, depending on weekdays and weekends. During weekends, their sleep-onset time was 18 minutes later than weekdays, and their wake time was 26 minutes late. Physical activity level was significantly higher during weekends as compared to weekdays. For subgroup analysis, students without obesity showed a significantly higher level of physical activity and longer total sleep time compared to those of students with obesity. For additional subgroup analysis, students who met physical activity level reported significantly longer total sleep time and delayed wake time than those who did not meet. There were positive correlations between these outcomes: physical activity level and total sleep time, total sleep time and wake time, and sleep-onset time and wake time. However, a negative relationship was observed between total sleep time and sleep-onset time. According to the study findings, it appears that physical activity level, sleep patterns, and obesity seem to be closely related to each other. Those results suggest that children and adolescents with developmental disabilities need to improve physical activity levels to prevent obesity and increase total sleep time.
