The purpose of this study is to investigate individual, family, and school-related risk factors of both the presence and intensity of adolescent suicidal behaviors simultaneously within a unified framework using the two-step Heckman selection model. By drawing on a nationwide sample of 1,015 adolescents collected for the National Survey of Domestic Violence in 2010, significant associations between diverse risk factors and suicidal behaviors were examined. The findings from the first step of the Heckman selection model showed that adolescent suicidal behavior was more likely to be found among adolescents who were female, from a lower socioeconomic status, victim of their father's violence, bullied at school, and depressed. The second step showed similar relationships with regard to the intensity of suicidal behavior with the lower academic achievement, depression and violence from father. Based on the results, suggested intervention strategies to address adolescent suicidal behaviors are discussed.
