The characters in plays, films, or television series cannot explain themselves only by acting without visual results. In this regard, effective makeup according to a role should be designed by physiognomic features to evoke many people’s empathy. This researcher considers that physiognomy not only has statistical value according to facial features, but also acts as a main element to make a character and it is necessary to examine the correlation between physiognomy and character makeup. The purpose of this study is to analyze physiognomic correlation between the intented personality of roles in films or television series and character makeup. The methods of the study included both theoretical research and empirical research. The theoretical research examined the concept of character makeup and physiognomy based on previous research and literature. The empirical research analyzed the correlation between physiognomic features in the three parts of the face(the hair to above of the eyebrow, the eyebrow to nose, and the nose to the end of the chin) which are the basic of physiognomy and character makeup. The scope of the study was protagonists’ makeup in films and television series produced after 2000. The concept of character makeup was defined to include hair styling as well as facial makeup and based on the parts which could be expressed by beauty makeup materials. This study examined the story of roles that expresses features by three parts of the face and applied the face-sectional study for analysis. The results were as follows. The forehead of the hair to above of the eyebrow represented character’s birth and intellectual levels by using physiognomy. The shape of eyebrow and eyes of the eyebrow to nose had the highest visual effect to reveal character’s personality. The lips of the nose to the end of the chin was very effective to enhance reality although they could be missed because of delicate expression. Based on the findings, makeup for characters and physiognomy were very closely correlated to express role’s personality in films and television series. The results of the study will contribute to a theoretical basis to enhance the application of makeup for roles.
