Language as a social fact has a dynamic nature, which is susceptible to the socialchange, development, and evolution. The dynamic nature of languages enables them to convey the accumulated knowledge of society and reflect the communal thought of members. Language is like an organism; a new word which is called neologism, is created to express new phenomena or concepts in society, is used by the members only when it is appropriate, and grows into standard language. In this context, this paper considers the neologisms coined after the incident of Covid-19 pandemic, which has great influence on the society. New words coined in 2020 were studied in order to detect social phenomena caused by Covid-19 in the Korean society. The ethnolinguistic approach was adopted using the secondary sources from the Online Dictionary which is generated by the Internet users and the characteristics of new words were analyzed. Terms that reflect the present social situations, such as ‘pandemic’ and ‘un-tact’, were the most sought rather than the terms relating to gender divisions in the past. Also, travel-related terms such as ‘hovi’, and ‘LAN travel’ or Corona related terms such as ‘mask’, ‘Corona blue’, ‘Corona divorce’ have frequently appeared, which encapsulates the socio-cultural phenomenon. Additionally, this paper confirms that the society has a strong tendency to be individualized with a term expressing individual but independent consumption, so that it concludes neologisms can serve as a barometer to detect changes in society.
