The goal of this paper is to analyze the development and implementation of a world music education program at a music library and thereby ascertain its educational meaning and limits. The first season of the “Friends Across the World Met through Music” program held at the Garam Music Library was conducted as a world music education program for elementary school students in 2017 and was revised, supplemented, and expanded into a second season in 2018. Both versions looked once a month at the musical characteristics of each cultural sphere by continent and in the last month students watched a performance that was given by expert artists of one of the repertories covered in the program. The program characteristics of “Friends Across the World Met through Music” are as follows. First, students gained an understanding of other cultural spheres’ music expression methods and performance methods by observing actual performances with the instruments and by using the instruments themselves. Second, the program enhanced students’ appreciation for other cultural spheres’ music and dance by linking the education program with performances. Third, students developed creative expression abilities through an integrated art program that incorporated hands-on activities. Fourth, the program established a network of regional cultural facilities by linking libraries, theaters, and museums. Fifth, the program reinforced the use of music materials by incorporating information search methods. By presenting a program that was conducted in an actual educational setting against a backdrop of an increasing emphasis on the need for intercultural music education coupled with a lack of study materials, it is hoped that this paper can be used as useful material for intercultural music education research.
