With the architectural planning and organization in the Georgian Era, the city of Bath established its reputation as a place of health and attraction for the leisured class. Starting with Jane Austen’s ambivalent association with the city, this essay examines how Bath’s architectural space is organized in Persuasion according to the structures of social hierarchies and class relationships. Persuasion begins with the bankrupt Elliot family’s dislocation from the family estate Kellynch Hall to Camden Place, a rented townhouse in Bath. The essay first examines how Bath’s social geography is contrasted with stratified social groups including the rural gentry and the newly-rising navy. Then, it considers how Sir Walter’s rigid association of place and rank reflects and perpetuates social hierarchies implemented by Georgian architecture and eventually creates a socially enclosed space. Ultimately, it shows how Austen envisions alternative social space pursuing inclusive and expansive relationships. While the Musgroves at White Hart Inn continue their family-oriented closeness yet show acceptance towards inferior social groups, the Westgate group of the fallen gentry Mrs. Smith represents the invisible, alienated space excluded from Bath’s high society. Through Bath streets, Austen presents possibilities of mobility and unification by emphasizing their democratic nature of admitting all social groups.
