In this article, I investigated the reason why the Woodcut occupied mainstream of art in Yan’an during Anti Japanese War(1937-1945) and the characteristic that was made visible in the creation of woodcut. For this, I first examined the activity of department of Fine Art in Luxun Academy of Art, that is, a centre of Woodcut Movement. Woodcut Research Team(木刻硏究班) carried an important meaning in that it demonstrated the utility of propaganda for an anti-Japanese struggle. And Woodcut Craft Group(木刻工作團) created New Woodblock Prints for New Year’s Pictures by paying attention to New Year’s Pictures as a sort of private arts. Furthermore, I investigated that the combination woodcut with private arts brought about New Woodblock Prints for New Year’s Pictures and Paper-cut for window decoration on the basis of the debate on National Form and Usage of old forms.
