This article argues three points. First, theories of democracy need to go beyond assuming the concept of ‘citizen governor,’ and acknowledge that citizens can exercise and realize their sovereignty as spectators who gaze upon the political stage. The theory of ocular democracy and the concept of ‘citizen spectator,’ as developed by Jeffrey Green, satisfy this point and thus deserve academic acclaim. Second, Green’s theory, however, would get more convincing and relevant if further developed and complemented, and this additional work calls for psychological and cultural studies from an interdisciplinary perspective to understand the emotions and sensibilities of the people gazing and being gazed upon. Third, the theory of ocular democracy and the concept of citizen spectator attain a particularly high relevance within the context of American politics, thereby demanding an interdisciplinary turn in the studies of American politics to the long-overlooked psychological and cultural studies on human sensibilities.
