This study examines how the two Korean independence political movements were related to Christianity and how they were historically meaningful to the Korean church’s modern history. The Korean churches actively participated in the independence movements along with Cheondoism (heavenly-way) during the Japanese colonial period. Many argues that the Korean independence movements were not related to Christianity in a sense that the world history and the religious history deal with different areas. However, this essay argues that Missio Dei, aiming at the kingdom of God, rules over not only the religious history but also the entire history. In view of this fact, this essay explores the importance of the theological and missional interpretations of the two Korean independence movements.
