The Cultural Heritage Administration stated in Article 4 (4) of the General Guidelines on the Preservation and Management of Seowon, "The use of Seowon should be evenly returned to the public, and in particular, contribute to enriching the local society, culture, and economy.“ Therefore, this paper will review the operating cases of the Seowon program and explore the educational environment of Geochang Dosanseowon for sustainable education and utilization by considering the environment of the Geochang area together. Currently, Dosanseowon has not been restored since Heungseon Daewongun's abolition in 1869 (the 6th year of King Gojong's reign), and only the monument to Dosanseowon remains in ilburi, Gajo-myeon, Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. Although there are no buildings left in disrepair, a step-by-step restoration and maintenance plan will be established through systematic research to collect comprehensive data and secure academic data, and a lot of efforts will be made to restore the Seowon space. However, Seowon is completed when there are scholars who are devoted to learning after the spirit of the ancestors oriented there. In other words, instead of focusing on restoring the appearance of the building, efforts should be made to devise a way to continue the spirit of the place and to prepare realistic ways to preserve and utilize the Confucian academy based on its original function. It is noticeable that the Seowon program, which has recently been operated, deviates from the uniform program in the past, and many differentiated programs appear according to the nature of the demand group by various ages and targets. In the past, there were many programs in Seowon that were considered boring, such as etiquette education, Chinese character education, and calligraphy classes, but now they are trying to transform into a complex cultural space with an image familiar to the public by developing various programs that attempted modern reinterpretation. If Dosanseowon is restored, efforts should be made to pass on the spiritual value of Dosanseowon to future generations by being faithful to the main function of the Confucian Academy as well as a cultural space. When such efforts continue, the true meaning of the restoration of Dosanseowon can be recalled.

문화재청은 ｢서원의 보존과 관리에 관한 일반 지침｣ 제4조 4항을 통해 ‘서원의 활용은 그 혜택이 국민에게 골고루 환원되어야 하며, 특히 지역의 사회ㆍ문화ㆍ경제를 풍요롭게 할 수 있도록 공헌 되어야 한다.’고 명시하였다. 이에 본고에서는 서원 프로그램의 운영사례를 검토하고, 거창 지역의 환경을 함께 고려하여 지속 가능한 교육과 활용을 위한 거창 道山書院의 교육 환경을 모색하고자 한다. 현재 도산서원은 1869년(고종 6)에 흥선대원군의 서원철폐령으로 훼철된 이후 복원하지 못하고 있으며, 경남 거창군 가조면 일부리에 도산서원 유허비만 남아 있는 실정이다. 비록 훼철되어 남아있는 건축물이 없긴 하나, 종합적인 자료수집과 학술적 자료 확보를 위해 체계적인 조사를 통해 단계적인 복원 정비 계획을 수립하고 서원 공간 복원을 위해 많은 노력을 기울일 것이다. 그러나 서원은 그곳에 배향된 선현들의 정신을 본받아 학문에 정진하는 선비들이 있을 때 그 공간이 완성된다. 즉 단순한 건축물 외형을 복원하는데 치중하는 것이 아닌 그곳에 깃든 정신을 이어나가기 위한 방법을 구상하고, 서원의 본래 기능에 바탕한 현대적 활용을 이어갈 수 있는 현실적인 서원의 보존 및 활용방안을 마련하기 위해 노력해야 한다. 최근 운영되고 있는 서원 프로그램은 과거의 획일적인 프로그램에서 벗어나 다양한 연령별, 대상별로 수요층의 성격에 따른 차별화된 프로그램이 많이 등장하는 것이 눈에 띈다. 예전에 서원에서는 예절교육, 한자교육, 서예 교실 등 고리타분하다고 여기는 프로그램이 많았다면 이제는 현대적 재해석을 시도한 다양한 프로그램 개발로 대중에게 친숙한 이미지로 다가갈 수 있는 복합 문화공간으로 변모를 꾀하고 있다. 도산서원이 복원된다면 문화공간으로서뿐만 아니라 서원의 본 기능에 충실하여 도산서원의 정신적 가치를 후대에 물려주는 노력이 있어야 한다. 그런 노력이 이어질 때 도산서원 복원의 참된 의미가 되새겨질 수 있을 것이다.
