The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of Baroque poetics in Korean modernist poetry in the 1930s. When considering the opinions that interpret avant-garde art in the early 20th century as modern baroque, it can be defined as an aesthetic attitude toward modernity that perceives allegory as a literary style. Modern baroque is the mental attitude of art that, upon witnessing the duality of modern reason and capitalism, considers the world to be in a state of ruin and attempts to capture it as a fragmented allegory. Kim Ki-rim, a representative modernist poet and poetic theorist in Korea during the 1930s, recognized Korea’s modernity in the context of world history, rather than seeing it as an expression of colonial specificity. Like European modernists, Kim tries to explore the possibility of salvation in this world, while also recognizing the destructiveness of modernity’s double-sided nature. He rediscovers the poet as an allegorist through strategies such as an allegorical style that rejects appropriative language and the theatricalization of the world. Through this radical view on the ontology of poetry and poets, modern baroque poetry can be perceived as the psychological structure of Korean modernism. This article analyzes Kim’s allegory in the context of modern allegorical theory. Also, by comparing the concept of a poet as a pierrot to the figure of a monarch in baroque tragic theater, this study examines the possibilities of baroque poetry in Korean modernism. Such efforts are also conducted to re-evaluate Kim Ki-rim’s modernism, which was evaluated to have been limited to simplified mannerisms due to his superficial awareness of modernity.
