The Song of Goats, the first poem book of Ch?ya Nakahara, features a number of expressions relating to the ‘identity crisis’ of the poet. In particular, the poem book reveals some essential aspects of the poet, if we regard the loss of Yasuko Hasegawa, his lifetime significant other, not as merely a heartbreak incident but as an event which made him stare the absolute apathetically. Most notably, the analysis of the female-related expressions in the poem book reveals that the heartbreak incident, which greatly shocked the poet, deepened his consciousness about the absolute. In what follows, I enumerate the female-related images evoked in the poem book. Firstly, the poet reified the female images by metaphorically expressing the repetition of negative expressions about the ordinary poetry expressions. This can be viewed as an attempt to obtain some unification of his internal facets through the process of reality-negation and resignation. Secondly, the poet described his lifetime lover as an extremely good person, symbolising the spirit of the woman who may exist in the world beyond afterlife in connection with the concept of death. Thirdly, he represented the image of an idealised female who accepts and tolerates everything. This suggests that the incident of identity crisis, which brought him a sense of deep loss, is not merely a heartbreak event but it made him deeply pathetic and led him to depend on the absolute
