Definitions of art are largely divided into functionalist definitions and proceduralist definitions. Functionalist definition can tell the value of art, while it is difficult to accept avant-garde art, and procedural definition can recognize avant-garde art, but has limitations in that it does not tell us about the value of art. In this situation, Dominic Lopes raises questions about the need for a definition of “art” that goes beyond the definition of individual art forms, and argues for a “buck-passing theory” that replaces the theory of art with the theories of arts. Buck-passing theory, simply put, is the view that something becomes art if it belongs to an individual art kind. In this article, I critically examine Lopes's theory and propose a possibility of procedural-functionalist definition. First, I demonstrate that we need a definition of art that goes beyond the theory of individual art forms. Second, I argue that the existing definitions of art are in a deadlock because avant-garde art forces us to give up the definition of art which tells the value of art, not because of a conflict of intuitions about whether to accept avant-garde art or not as Lopes argues. Third, by introducing a concept of artistic value proposed by Tomas Kulka, I propose a possibility of a procedural-functionalist definition that can introduce procedural elements while telling the value of works of art. Through these discussions, I would like to show that in order to define art, it is essential to consider the value of art along with contextual elements such as art institutions and history.
