This paper aims to clarify in detail the implications of the ‘medium’ as technical support which Rosalind Krauss suggested in Voyage on the North Sea: Art in the Age of Post-Medium Condition. Although many studies have reviewed this text as the important initiative and the core thesis of her ‘post-medium’ discussion, this is often misled or criticized for a revisionist view of Clement Greenberg’s Modernism. It is partially due to her obscure and counter-intuitive description –especially, of the conceptualism-- in this text, but also, to some superficial views on her binarity. On this problematic horizon, this paper re-examines the kernel of her explanation on the works of Marcel Broodthaers and her conception of medium-specificity and recursivity. Through this, my paper argues as follows: first, for Krauss, Broodthaers’s work is not just a case of reinventing the medium but the moment to expose the paradox of Modernist art pursuing its purity and essence. Second, Krauss’s conception of the self-differential specificity of medium is different from the medium-specific purity of Modernist arts. Third, in the terms of post-structurist semiotics and cybernetics, the self-differential specificity is the very recursive structure that produces the so-called ‘plural-singularity’ of the aesthetic medium.
