Yangju, a city in Gyeonggi, South Korea, operates 31 large-scale public sports facilities. This study has conducted an accessibility analysis of the 31 facilities, classified into 9 types(sports center, badminton court, tennis court, table tennis court, baseball field, foot volleyball court, soccer field, futsal court, and rock wall), to identify poorly-serviced areas and insufficiently-supplied types of facilities.
First, southern towns are identified as a low-accessibility area. The central area of Jangheung, one of the eleven towns, where the population is concentrated, is prioritized. Second, table tennis courts and badminton courts out of the 9 types of facilities are identified as facilities to be expanded due to a high poorly-serviced area ratio and a high ratio of population residing in those areas. This study suggests that Yangju should prioritize Jangheung, table tennis courts, and badminton courts in initiating its expansion project.
In addition, this study recommends that Yangju should establish a mid- to long-term expansion plan to supply balanced public sports facilities among areas. The case study of Gimpo, Goyang, and Gyeongju suggests that mid- to long-term plans are needed to respond to the increased demand for facilities due to population growth and to bridge the service gap between old and new towns. Yangju, where population growth is expected due to urban development, may experience a significant increase in demand for facilities and therefore needs a mid- to long-term plan for facility expansion to prepare in advance. For a more comprehensive plan, Yanju may incorporate private facilities as well as public facilities into consideration and conduct a citizen survey to understand demand.
