On December 31, 2022, Yonhap News Agency published an article titled “A remake of the North Korean animation Prince Hodong and Princess Nakrang with 3D technology.” In recent years, digital remakes have emerged as a type of content production frequently used worldwide. For instance, North Korea has digitally remade 2D animated traditional films. Since about 2002, North Korea used computers to produce partially animated films, and as of 2003, digital technology has developed to the extent where it is capable of fully handling the production of short 3D computer animations. In 2005, feature 2D computer animation Heungbu and Nolbu and The Enchanted Mountain were produced. Butterfly and Cock (1977) is a short cartoon movie that North Korea has touted as a great work. It was remade as a 2D digital animation in 2006. It is a faithful remake that reflects the theme and story of the original. But the detailed changes in the scene, design, and acting are observable.
