The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the possibility of after-school self-care children of elementary school. Data from the 10th Korean Children’s Panel (2017) were used, and 1,292 children in the third-grade elementary school were investigated. The results of the study were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 program, and they were as follows: The monthly average household income, total number of children, mother employment, household composition, and private service variables were found to have a statistically significant effect on the self-protection potential of third-grade elementary school children. On the other hand, it was found that children’s gender, size of residence, mother’s final education, mother’s working hours during the week, whether the support system is used or not, mother’s age, and non-use of educational services did not significantly affect children’s self-protection potential. In particular, it was found that private services increase the number of users as children’s age increases, but at the same time, they also form a care gap. Accordingly, it is suggested that the government’s efforts to sufficiently expand public care services, which are currently concentrated on low-income and low-age, to general households are needed.
