The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the limitations of the Trinitarian mission theology paradigm(Missio Trinitas). The theology came out basically from the limitations of Missio Dei . However, the emphasis between Lesslie Newbegin’s and the ecumenical camp’s seems to be different even though they use the same term ‘Trinitarian Mission Theology’. In other words, if Newbegin advocated the mission of the Trinity to include the mission of the Son in Missio Dei , WCC insisted it to emphasize the mission of the Holy Spirit in Missio Dei, that is, the role of the Holy Spirit for the life and liberation of all creatures.
The trinitarian theology widely accepted today in the ecumenical camp emphasizes the follow: 1) emphasis of the inner Trinity rather than the economic Trinity, 2) the extensive work of the Holy Spirit, and 3) the work of the Trinity for the sustenance of all life in creation. The Trinitarian mission theology has contributions such as providing legitimacy for social justice and challenging world participation; but at the same time it also has some limitations such as the possibility of weakening the work of salvation in missions, the possibility of weakening the effectiveness of missions due to excessively wide goal setting, and confusion and pluralism of the view of salvation. In this regard, when emphasizing the Trinitarian mission theology, it seems necessary to properly accept Newbegin’s view of the Trinitarian mission theology.
