This article aims to provide an analysis of the first book of Horace’s Epistles from the perspective of philosophical protreptic. Although the relationship between Horace and philosophy has been widely explored, less attention has been given to Horace’s approach to specific genres and texts of ancient philosophical literature. This article sets out to explore this aspect by analysing the protreptic characteristics of Horace’s first book of Epistles, the general conception of philosophy that emerges from it, and how this relates to the specific textual form chosen for this collection: the poetic epistle. This analysis allows us to see how the philosophical content is not limited, but rather reinforced by the textual form assumed by it; in fact, the protreptic position assumed by Horace is made possible by the communicative and didactic potential of the poetic and epistolary form. Furthermore, this article may provide some useful insights into the genre of protreptic in ancient philosophical literature and its definition.
