It is remarkably rare for Korean adolescents to voluntarily choose physical activities during their daily routines unless required by physical education within their school curriculum. Physical inactivity is highly related to the sedentary behavior of teenagers in Korea, as 9 out of 10 teenagers in Korea are reported to lack exercise, and ranked at the bottom among the OECD countries for having the least amount of exercise volume. According to previous research, adolescents do not engage in physical activities due to laziness and lack of interest. The main issues are that although Korean teenagers recognize the importance of physical activity, this perception does not translate to their actual engagement in physical activities, and it seems that the sedentary lifestyle continues to grow for teenagers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to propose an augmented reality-based physical activity authentication app to design a behavior change that allows adolescents to voluntarily modify sedentary behavioral patterns and maintain their engagement in physical activities. We consulted a number of theories related to behavioral change, and applied a suitable strategy for the adolescents targeted. First, a literature review and a survey of 100 middle and high school students were conducted to understand adolescents’ perceptions towards their physical activity levels and to set up a concrete intervention target. After proposing the developed design based on the theory of behavioral change and the survey results, HUT (Home User Test) was conducted for two weeks, and the effects of the intervention design was quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed using the CMO (Context Mechanism, Outcome) analysis framework as an evaluation of the intervention. The results suggested that the AR physical activity enhancement app proposed by us can positively change from a sedentary lifestyle pattern to a life exercise pattern in adolescents if the behavioral change inducing characteristics are strengthened and improved.
