This paper proposes a method to alleviate and prevent rust and pitting corrosion on K1 tank barrel by utilizing Solid Film Lubrication (SFL). The SFL is utilized in this case for its corrosion preventive properties rather than its lubricative properties as the surface of the tank barrel is not in contact with any other surfaces. The primary cause of development of rust and pitting corrosion on the tank barrel is condensation. Atmospheric temperature fluctuations result in condensation of water droplets on the outer surface of the tank barrel underneath the fume extractor. The formation of rust and pitting on the surface of the tank barrel was studied through the analysis of the corrosion mechanism. In order to alleviate and overcome corrosion issues, protective coating on the surface of the tank barrel is necessary. Rust and pitting corrosion are most prominent on unpainted surface sections of the K1 tank barrel, which are the fume extractor section and the outer surface underneath the recoil mechanism. Solid Film Lubrication is a viable protective coating due to its ability to withstand high temperatures. The proposed method for SFL application addresses the case of depot maintenance and field maintenance, and provides two separate solutions.
