Bukchon, which is densely populated with urban hanok built to reflect the modern lifestyle, was in the spotlight as a representative residential area of Seoul in the 1920s and 1940s because of its proximity to government offices and prestigious schools. It was regarded as the center of politics, education, and culture of Korea during the Japanese colonial period as well as after liberation. After the 1970s, as the political and financial center moved to Yeouido, and schools and businesses were located in Gangnam, the general public"s preference for urban hanok in Bukchon began to gradually shift to a new residential type called apartment.
After the Hanok Preservation District was lifted in 1990, poor multi-family housing was built and ruined the scenery of Bukchon. In 2001, hanok conservation policies were implemented, but in the meantime, many urban hanoks that were used as residences were converted into restaurants, workshops, cafes, and guest houses. Recently, Bukchon is considered a representative example of ‘overtourism’, in which the lives of residents are destroyed due to the arrival of tourists rather than a quiet residential area.
This research examines the events that have affected the changes in living conditions of Bukchon urban hanok over the past 100 years, and the response of urban hanok to these events. I would like to find a way for urban hanok to evolve into a residential type that accommodates our current lifestyle.
