An urban Hanok is reevaluated as a residence which selectively carried on an inner and outer spatial structure of the traditional Hanok that consists of a house and a yard while a narrow space of a modern city is used effectively. One is able to corroboratively verify a receptivity of the traditional Hanok in a current manner of living and some features inherited from the tradition to the present day. In this research, we explore and clarify a traditional living conditions of the urban Hanok by looking into an autobiographical novel called 『House with a Sunken Courtyard』. The novel describes a family and a society according to a life style in the urban Hanok during the postwar period. Through this novel, we are able to prove a living conditions of the urban Hanok which cannot be verified by the current building structure. Moreover, we investigate a relationship between the house and the yard by focusing on some characteristics of the inner and outer spatial structure which has been selectively carried on to the modern urban Hanok.
