The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic had caused havoc in many aspects of our routine, especially for the elderly, who are not only most vulnerable to the infection but have altered their means of social interactions which resulted in loneliness, and isolation contributing to a variety of unfavorable health effects. As now the world moves towards the post-pandemic era, it is important to consider the well-being of the elderly and suggest outdoor communal spaces that would be beneficial for their mental and physical health. International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) has its WELL Community Standard certificate that encourages the community to build a strong identity that fosters social interaction and engagement. Community gardening/urban gardening serves as a public space that encourages individuals to interact with the environment and other users as well.
This study aimed to identify the importance of community gardens as social interaction hubs for the elderly who felt isolated and neglected because of social distancing during the pandemic. The study looked at the various works of literature and case studies on community gardens with the reference to the IWBI WELL community standard, and its various aspects which encourage creating communal and green spaces for creating a strong community.
Based on the literature reviews, case study, and assessment of IWBI WELL Community standard it is assessed community gardens are beneficial in providing active participation for the elderly in community building, and social interaction. These gardens may encourage urban agriculture and growing herbs and vegetables along with plants that help in purifying the air and helps in reducing the spread of airborne diseases.
