Environmental changes are shifting our priorities for natural resource management. With the quest for more sustainable fibers, new non-conventional silybum marianum seed fibers are explored in this fiber analysis. Silybum marianum seed fibers were harvested from the seed pods of one of the most common weed plants in United States and Europe. This study examines physical and chemical characteristics of silybum marianum seed fibers. Testing was conducted in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The determination of silymarin components in fibers was conducted using a liquid chromatograph summit detector (HPLC-UV) in accordance with European standards. The results of SEM microscopic analysis indicated similarity in fiber morphology to other non-conventional seed fibers such as kapok and poplar fibers. Similarity in cross-section and longitudinal views amongst non-conventional seed fibers established them to be a promising natural source for a variety of end uses. Additionally, moisture content, chemical composition, and silymarin extraction testing of Silybum marianum seed fibers were conducted. Silymarin extraction indicated presence of silymarin in fibers, however, further testing needs to be conducted on whether silymarin would be absorbed from thistle fibers to human body through dermal absorption – thus providing medicinal benefits.
