More than half of Korean households live in apartments. The structure of these apartments can be classified into two main types, flat-type and tower-type, and the two types greatly differ in ventilation, view, structure, and so on. However, previous studies comparing the two types are currently focused on comparing energy, sunlight, and viewing area, but studies analyzing structural differences in indoor space are insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to quantitatively compare and analyze the structural differences between the flat-type and the tower-type apartments using space syntax. First, based on the theory of environmental psychology, the reason why the structure of space is important was examined, and the theory of space syntax was contemplated. After that, the differences were identified by grasping the spatial characteristics (space composition, area ratio by space composition) of the flat-type and the tower-type apartments and the characteristics of space syntax using the program of depth map. This study targeted the apartment of Hillstate, the No. 1 brand reputation index, and the results were as follows. First, in the case of spatial characteristics, it was analyzed that the tower-type has a larger living room area than the flat-type. Second, in the case of the characteristics of space syntax, as a result of the analysis of justified map, it was found that the tower type has a deeper spatial structure than the flat type. In addition, the results of the analysis of visual integration show that the tower-type has a larger gap between the open and isolated spaces than the flat-type. As such, this study is meaningful in that it quantitatively compared and analyzed the flat-type and the tower-type apartments, which were mostly concentrated only on energy and sunlight comparison studies, using space syntax.
