The purpose of this study was to identify the flapper cultural phenomenon and its meaning in the United States by examining the text of popular stories and the cover images of popular magazines in the 1920s. The primary sources were F. Scott Fitzgerald"s short story collection Flappers and Philosophers and the Life magazine cover illustration by John Held. In the 1920s, the United States became a leading playerdue to its victory in World War I, which greatly strengthened its status and contributed to the booming economy. Adita, Majorie, and Bernice, who are the main characters in the stories "The Offshore Pirates" and "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" in Flappers and Philosophers, were independent women who did not give in to the social pressing. F. Scotte Fitzgerald mainly depicted their thoughts and actions, moral values, and open sexual consciousness. In Held"s illustrations, flapper"s were depicted with a skinny, non-curvy body, and simplified provocative images had ripple effects and became stereotypes in popular culture. Flappers were seen as a generation of immature women with self-indulgent attitudes and sexual aggression in a chaotic and tumultuous atmosphere. These flapper descriptions are similar to those in Flappers and Philosopher which indicates that they were the attitudes and cultures of the new generations of the time. From the above results, it can be seen that the image of the flapper generation, which includes mass-produced goods, represents a society that emphasizes consumerism, hedonism, and sex consumption.
