In this paper, ‘Manyoshu’, ‘Kokinwakashu’, and ‘Shinkokinwakashu’ are used as research materials, and the historical changes of ‘rashi ’ used in them is considered. The results of the study are summarized as follows.
First, ‘rashi’ was often used in ‘Manyoshu’, but its usage decreased sharply in ‘Kokinwakashu’.
Second, ‘rashi’ is used when making assumptions supported by solid evidence. So, in ‘Manyoshu’, ‘rashi’ was used together with ‘miyu’ and ‘kikoyu’ in many cases. However, there were only four such examples in ‘Kokin wakashu’, and there was no example in ‘Shinkokinwakashu’.
Third, ‘rashi’ was used together with the adverbs ‘ube’ and ‘makoto’ in ‘manyoshu’. However, ‘rash; ’ is not used together with ‘ube’ and ’makoto’ not only in ‘Shinkokinwakashu’, but also in ‘Kokinwakashu’ in the Heian period,
