This paper focuses on the element of age in the works “Mr. Mouri” and “About Myself At That Time” by Akutagawa Ryunosuke and discusses the reasons underlying the author’s portrayal of age, by referring to his letters, surrounding works, and the situation of the literary world during his era. By relating this discussion to use of the expression the great time in Akutagawa’s letters, it became clear that the contrast between the past and present in “Mr. Mouri” refers to the power of “time”, which transforms things into relics of the past. In addition, by considering both “Mr. Mouri” and “About Myself At That Time”, it can be noted that age, through which the new replaces the old, also reflects the turbulent situation of the literary world of his era. Akutagawa’s other writings on Tayama Katai, as well as Katai’s own discourse, darify that Akutagawa was keenly aware at the time of this contemporaneous context, which transformed the old things of the literary world, or the Japanese naturalistic literature, into a thing of the past. In other words, Akutagawa’s interest when he wrote “Mr. Mouri” and “About Myself At That Time “ was in the turbulent times, and thus indicates a major reason for the change in his evaluation of Katai.
