This study focuses on occupations as described in Kamakura Shogei Sode Nikki, which was written during the Edo era, a period dominated by an unstable capitalist society. The aim is to gain insights on how occupations change, which can then be applied to changes to occupations as part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Thus, I classified the occupations and experiences of the characters in Kamakura Shogei Sode Nikki.
The characters are artists, clergy, doctors, warriors, and craftspeople (chonin) and nearly all have no professional consciousness. Thus, they are described in a ridiculous manner, but some adapt to the new environment. These characters successfully alter their thinking and professional consciousness in light of their abilities and will. The study concludes that we can gain insight about changes to occupations by reading Kamakura Shogei Sode Nikki, which should assist readers in altering their thinking and their own professional consciousness, in light of their abilities and will, in order to succeed during the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
