Protestant worship in the 21st century has been developed significantly through conversation with other Christian communities under the influence of the liturgical movement and broader ecumenical dialogue. With this situation in mind, this paper contains seven proposals regarding the content and form of Protestant worship as required by the present era, in addition to education on worship.
First, Protestant worship should be directed toward descriptive research that respects various spiritualities and worship forms, rather than normative studies seeking to construct absolute examples. Second, worship demands a clear understanding of its essential elements; that is, its universal and unchanging elements. I present the Bible, the sacraments, the embodiment of church tradition and salvation history, and the living confession of the community of worship as unchangeable elements of Protestant worship. Third, a flexible approach to the variable elements of worship is recommended. In particular, serious reflection is required on how to embrace and foster the culture of younger churches or in the mission field creatively. Fourth, open-mindedness toward modern culture is necessary to harbor the wisdom to make good use of it. Fifth, it is necessary to apply multi-dimensional research to analyze the context of liturgy closely. Sixth, worshipers must pursue the practical theology of serving the church and society. Seventh, an embracing attitude should be adopted toward various issues raised in modern worship, such as hospitality and participation of laypeople.
Protestant communities in the 21st century, which emphasize mission and seek evangelical worship, should possess both diversity and constancy, maintaining individuality while working toward greater hospitality.
