The name Kim Dae-jung resonated throughout the 20<SUP>th</SUP> century’s latter half, and still does now when we recollect on the period’s political history. There have been numerous historical evaluations, proportionate to his status in our history, that already came out. Previous studies, however, focused on highlighting his ideology and philosophy, when he was not actually a philosopher who only authored things in his life. He was a politician, with a long history associated with the institutionalized opposition party. So I think his journey in real life should take a more center stage in the historians’ evaluations of his accomplishments and deeds.
Examined in this article is his early activities in the 1960s, with a focus on his internal strength as well as external conditions that propelled him to political rise. Examination of the former reveals that the oppression from the junta ever since the May 16th military coup, and shortage of personnel in the opposition party, was what enabled Kim Dae-jung to grow as a person and a politician, while examination of the latter shows us he formed a new-style faction of his own, with the research center and also his closest secretaries.
Kim Dae-jung abolished some age-old political practices, by merging his own political faction with the modernization discourses that had been prevailing in the Korean society at the time. But he also did so at the cost of opposition party politics, immersing it even deeper into factionalism in the long run. He was able to embrace Western concepts and renew the appearance of Korean politics, but could not quite sever the ties with certain habits unique to the Korean society’s past. Hopefully this article would be able to suggest a way to reinterpret the history of the Korean opposition party in terms of political culture and modernity.
