In the wake of the dethronement of King Wonjong in 1269, Crown Prince Wangsim and his entourage sought to marry a Mongolian princess. Their effort came to fruition in 1274, when the marriage finally took place. However, King Chungryeol gained not the status of the emperor"s son-in-law but only that of the “husband of the princess.” For the Mongols, King Chungryeol was no more than a foreign monarch having no close political relations with the Great Khan.
In 1278, King Chungyeol promised to help Kublai"s war, and in 1281, succeed in gaining the status of the emperor"s son-in-law. At the same time, he also acquired the post of governor of Jeongdong Haengseong, heading the provisional military command organization in parallel with the Mongol governor.
The Nayan Rebellion, broken out in 1284, transfromed Jeongdong Haengseong into a permanent military command organization. While the rebel imperial family of Eastern Ulus collapsed, King Chungyeol, having helped Kubilai"s warfare since 1278, acquired the new status of the the Mongol prince(諸王) as a son of the Great Khan in 1290 and become the sole governor of Jeongdong Haengseong in 1287.
In brief, the Mongol Yuan"s intervention in Goryeo was caused by the Goryeo king"s special status as the Mongol prince under the Mongol hegemony.
