The purpose of this study is to examine the case of the operation of the Korean Forces dispatched to Vietnam for the Military Medal of Honor and to find its implications.
At the time of dispatch to Vietnam, the Korean government applied "wartime service" to soldiers dispatched, and implemented an war proxy reward system specified in the Awards and Decorations Act. Accordingly, 3 out of a total of 5 class military medals were delegated to the commander of the Korean Forces in Vietnam. As a result, the Korean Forces was able to exercise its autonomy in awarding medals to a limited extent.
During the Vietnam War, the operation of the Order of Military Merit was the first case since the enactment of the Awards and Decorations Act in 1963, and played an important role in enhancing the honor of soldiers who established their majors and encouraging combat morale. In particular, the prior notice that one person per 14 people could receive a medal contributed to the morale of soldiers. Korea"s awarding of medals to foreign troops on the battlefield was also useful in military and diplomatic terms. Through this study, the subjects and standards for the award of the Military Merit Medal, the procedure for awarding the Military Merit Medal, the operation of awards other than medals, and the performance and problems of the operation of the Military Merit Medal at the time were confirmed.
However, it was also confirmed that the establishment of standards for awarding medals in accordance with the fair and changed battlefield environment, additional honors after the withdrawal from Vietnam, and valuation of overseas military merit are tasks to be considered for the development of the military merit system.
